There are some new statistics out and they don't look good. Usually, you have to use a grain of salt with many statistics, but not for this one. Here's the news report:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070315/ap_on_he_me/colleges_substance_abuse
(Sorry, ignorant as to how to link with this new Mac) Anyways, from my own knowledge I can attest to this report's validity firsthand. We expect college kids to go out and have a good time, we expect the occasional kegger, the occasional funny story to bring back home when you were so drunk that.... Truth be told, it's gone too far for many, and I know of a couple who are borderline addicted to drinking alcohol and it all started in college.
Why? Why do people drink themselves in a stupor so many times? Boredom? Maybe for some. I've been in that place before. Maybe they are running from something, maybe they want to aviod something under the viel of being the "party guy". Whatever the reason, more are doing it-to the point of addiction, and it could become a crippiling emotional problem for the best and brightest in our nation.

I went to one of the biggest party schools (makes the top ten list every year), and we had a few people die from alcohol poisoning. As you stated, I think people do use alcohol as a veil. People are less inhibited when under the influence, and it also serves to temporarily disguise pain. How sad that people are hurting that badly that they have to regularly consume excess amounts of this addictive drug.
I've been there too...used to drink in school. Somedays i can't believe I'm still alive.
This makes me so thankful for our Saviour and that our present sufferings are so insignificant compared with the future weight of glory.
well put Alyssa, I can say with him that I share with the "chief of sinners" thing.
